Converting A Page into a Template

  • We are going to create a template for our website so all of our pages will have a consistent look
  • There are a few different ways to create a template
    1. You can build a page with the complete look you want to have and convert that page to a template
    2. You can create a blank html page, add your design, convert that to a template and move your page content into it
    3. Start with a blank Dreamweaver template page and build your page from there
  • We presently have pages that have been created but do not have any specific CSS positioning attached to them
  • We are going to use a page that has been created using CSS positioning and use that page as our template
  • Open template-convert.html and choose Save As Template from the File menu
  • Name it main-content and note the .dwt file extension
  • Look in the Files panel, there will now be a Templates folder within the site with this file in it
  • Also take a look at the Assets panel, our template is now listed within that area once you click the Templates icon in the left column
