Emotions: Non-Verbal Communication

  • Paul Ekman is the researcher most connected to facial expressions and nonverbal communication with a focus on microexpressions
  • The functions of NVC include expression of emotions, attitudes, aid in communication, and take part in rituals
  • Kinesics—study of gestures and movements during communication
  • Proxemics—study of space people place between themselves and others—how the space is used—territory markers
  • Paralanguage is the variation of voice quality, pitch, rate, volume, etc. to change meaning of words
  • Metcommunication is the study of messages send that are beyond the words—Deborah Tannen has done work on males and females in how they communicate both in relationships and at work
  • NVC is not universal—each culture has its own display rules
