Shenandoah High School Review

Shenandoah High School is a virtual high school offering students in 9th through 11th grades with small class sizes and individual learning plans and a curriculum that blends school based learning with work based learning. Along with core subjects the school offer video production.

Many students stated that the school lacks electives, extra curricular activities, sports and student clubs. Many would love to see other activities included into the curriculum and in before and after school programs. However, the curriculum and learning methods offered are excellent. Many parents are pleased with the choices offered but would also like to see more sports as some of their children are not getting enough exercise, which is a concern.

Quite a few parents expressed that the lack of teacher involvement is causing many students not to become productive members of society. Most were not happy that courses such as math and science were only available virtually without any teacher support at all. Other parents expressed they love the school and that their children are doing wonderful.

The Academic Performance Index showed a decline of 33 points to 705. Some parents expressed this is a sign that the teachers are not working with students as much as they should be in order for them succeed.

The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.

Shearer Charter School Review

Shearer Charter School opened in 1999 to offers families an alternative to traditional school that will cater to the whole child. The school serves students in pre-kindergarten through fifth. The school offers excellent teachers that work with students on an individual basis. Within the curriculum, students are involved in music, art, and physical education. There are no other extra curricular activities; however, field trips are often blended with learning trips. The student body population is diverse which includes 87% Hispanic, 7% White, 1% Asian, and 6% unspecified.

Most parents are very pleased with the curriculum, which includes computer classes, music, art, and physical education classes. Parents said the teachers go above and beyond to ensure the students enjoy learning and want to become life long learners. A few parents on the other hand, stated that academically the school is quite a bit below other schools in the area. The school does focus on English learners as mentioned by several parents. Students said they really enjoy going to school and love their teachers.

The Academic Performance Index showed a decline of 18 points from the previous year to a score of 749. The statewide goal is 800. Some parents were concerned about the drop in score, while others were not as worried as they know it is the best school for their children.

Sequoia Charter School Review

Sequoia Charter School opened in 2006 to offer at risk students with a year round school for students in 7th through twelfth grades. Along with core subjects, the school offers specialized programs for students with special education needs including emotional behavioral disabilities, health impairments, and specific learning disabilities. Extra curricular activities available are painting and video production. The school does not offer any sports, which is a huge disappointment for many students. The diverse student is comprised of 56% White, 22% African American, 18% Hispanic or Latino, 2% Asian, and 2% unspecified.

The community is happy that the school opened in their area and is doing an excellent job of providing students with the extra attention they need to succeed. Most parents rave on the small class sizes and the devoted teachers. Some students stated they like their teachers but would really enjoy more activities.

Sebastopol Independent Charter School Review

Sebastopol Independent Charter School opened in 1995 to offers families an alternative to traditional schools. The school uses the Waldorf curriculum. Along with core subjects, the school provides extra curricular activities and sports, which include basketball, volleyball, ceramics, painting, choir, orchestra, and drama. The school serves students in kindergarten through 8th grades.

Parents expressed that the teachers are dedicated, caring, and brilliant. All teachers show students respect and provide fun and entertaining education models. Several students said they love the activities the school offers such as singing, painting, and physical education classes. Some parents were not excited about the school and stated that the school does not work with each student to ensure their success and some students are falling behind. Some parents even stated that the school is only average.

The Academic Performance Index showed a decline of 13 points from the previous year to a score of 858. The statewide goal is 800. Parents were not happy at all with the drop but are still happy that the school is above the statewide goal.

Science & Technology Academy at Knights Landing Review

Science & Technology Academy at Knights Landing opened in 2010 to serve students in kindergarten through sixth grades with a curriculum that blends science and technology. The school works with students to ensure their needs are met whether they need more educational support services, accelerated curriculum, or a more challenging curriculum. Parents and students alike really enjoy the Sci-Tech Fun Factor that allows students to join in hands on learning events, which include such things like the Mars Landing Egg Drop Contest, Super Sci-Tech Science Fair, and monthly whole school science days.

Along with core subjects, the school provides a music program. Fourth grade students begin with a recorder class that also teaches music theory and how to read music, while 5th and 6th graders have the opportunity to join one of the bands, which are beginning band and advanced band. No other sports or activities are offered. Many students would like the opportunity to participate in sports.

All parents that offered their opinion love the school, staff, and teachers. Many stated it is the best school in the area offering a safe and nurturing environment. Students love attending the school and their teachers.

The curriculum is rigorous but offers tailored lesson plans for each student to ensure their success. Students are able to learn in a style that fits their needs and at their own pace. Teachers offer small group instruction as well as one on one instruction to ensure the goals of each student are met.

Parents are thrilled that the school is working with students on an individual basis to ensure they graduate high school and go on to college or have the skills to enter the workforce. Most parents stated that you could tell the teachers truly care if their students succeed. Students stated they like their teachers and all the options when it comes to electives.

School of Arts and Enterprise Review

School of Arts and Enterprise opened in 2003 as a charter school for students in 9th through 11th grades to blend core subjects with arts and art related business. Students are introduced to the various art related businesses and can pursue their own career upon graduation. Along with core subjects, there are many different clubs and other activities for students that wish to participate. The curriculum is based on project based methods to ensure that students that have the best opportunity to learn. The student body population is diverse including 73% Hispanic or Latino, 11% White, 10% African American, 1% Asian, 1% Filipino, and 4% unspecified.

Students expressed that the school is not what it claims to be. Even though they offer music programs, the classes are not better than traditional schools. The dance program as stated by students is pretty good and fun. Some students were concerned that there is no security on the school property and that they do not feel safe at school. Some parents had some of the same concerns but did state that the overall curriculum is excellent. Many parents are talking with administration and teachers with their concerns for safety and that a few staff members seem to be unprofessional.

They stated they were treated with respect and were very kind. Parents love the curriculum and the safe learning environment.
