Watsonville Charter School of the Arts Review

Watsonville Charter School of the Arts opened in 2001 to serve students in kindergarten through 8th grades with an alternative to traditional school settings. The school integrates visual arts, drama, music, and dance, into science, math, language arts, and social studies. Music as well as visual arts are included in the core subjects.

The majority of parents truly love the school and the teachers. Some parents expressed that the younger classes have the best teachers and that as the children graduate into the higher classes that teachers are not as kind and are often bullied by other students. Students really like the curriculum, which helps them learn.

The Academic Performance Index increased 11 points to 812. The statewide goal is 800. Parents are very happy with the API score even though they are not as happy with the 5 out of 10 API statewide rank.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.

The percentage of students passing the exams was mixed. Examples include 74% of 3rd graders passed the math exam with the state average at 69%, 61% of 5th graders passed the English exam with the state at 63%, and 50% of 6th graders passed the English exam with the state at 59%.

The school is providing a wonderful education for students in a nurturing environment. To ensure the school is the best fit for your family, you should take a tour and talk with other parents that have students enrolled.
