The University of Saint Mary follows its main goal of educating students from diverse backgrounds and helping them reach the full-potential they are endowed with. Each student is given the personal attention that is required to learn how to put their inherent skills to good use and to use the learning resources at the university in the best way possible. This all-round course preparation elevates a student at the academic and a personal level, preparing them to be great managers when they enter the business world. The University has gained a reputation for developing graduates who are proven leaders with strong decision-making and problem-solving skills
The humble beginnings of the University of Saint Mary may come as a surprise, considering what it has grown into today. It originated as a small academy for young men and women, founded by The Sisters of Charity in 1858. A year later, the first boarding school was opened for girls only in downtown Leavenworth. When it was filled to capacity with women from different parts of the United States thronging to the place, a new boarding school was built in 1870, at the University’s current location and it was called St. Mary’s Academy. This Academy was a huge success and in 1923, the name was changed to Saint Mary College, a junior college for women. Then it began admitting men and became a co-ed in the coming years. Today, it has four campuses where fully accredited university degrees are offered. The main campus is in Leavenworth and the other two are in Overland Park; Shawnee; and Kansas City in Kansas.
The university offers 27 undergraduate degrees (including six accelerated evening degree programs) and six graduate degrees. Students can choose to study at any of the four different campuses mentioned above. The college is famous for its Business programs and even received specialized accreditation for them. The Business programs accredited by the IACBE are in the degrees including Bachelor’s in Business Administration and Accounting, with concentrations in Marketing and General Management; Master’s in Business Administration with concentrations in Human Resource Management, General Management, Finance, Marketing/Advertising Management and Health Care Management. The University’s Bachelor’s program in Nursing is also accredited by CCNE, the relevant authorities. With the student-faculty ration at 12:1, students are guaranteed to get personal attention. The Princeton Review named USM the “Best Midwestern College” for the first time consecutively. Students can also receive scholarships and financial aid.
For students who cannot for reasons of their own make it to any of these campuses, there are online degree programs too. The faculty work closely with online students and there are advisors to ensure they are able to access the courses and programs as they should be. The online educational platform used is edTek, which is advanced and delivers courses easily. Students just need to log on and access all their work, including lectures and assignments. Degree programs that are offered online are Master’s in Teaching, a Certification in Health Care Management and an RN to BSN completion program, and more programs are going to be added soon.
It’s not all about first rate academics at USM. Students enjoy several opportunities to participate in student activities and athletics along with other fun activities. The beauty of this university is that 95% of their students receive loans, grants and scholarships. Students get all possible help during their education at USM, along with financial help, helping them achieve their goal of advanced education and beautiful careers when they enter the real world.
