Sierra Expeditionary Learning Charter School Review

Sierra Expeditionary Learning Charter School opened in 2010 to provide students in kindergarten through 5th grades with a quality education. On average, the school has an enrollment of just above 108 students per year. This school has a very unique curriculum and one that provides project based studies. The curriculum is different as students often spend as much time out of the classroom with fieldwork and adventures that truly bring learning to life.

Students really enjoy going to school and love their teachers. The close-knit learning environment is one that is fun filled as well as highly educational. Parents love the fact that teachers and parents work together as a team to ensure the success of each student. Parents stated that the way in students learn create a learning atmosphere that make children want to learn.

The Academic Performance Index showed a decline of 27 points to 900. The statewide goal is 800. Parents were not happy with the drop in points but were not concerned at all since they are still above the statewide goal.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.

The percentage of students passing the exams was mixed. Examples include 100% of 2nd graders passed the English Language Arts exam with the state average at 58%, 42% of 4th graders passed the math exam with the state average at 71%, and 88% of 6th graders passed the English exam with the state at 59%. Even with a few of the percentages before state averages, the school is providing a quality education. Parents expressed that this helps teachers know the areas that need work and which students may need a bit more guidance.

Overall, the school is doing an excellent job of providing students with a quality education. If you have any concerns, it would be a good idea to talk with teachers and ensue the learning environment is a good fit for your child before enrolling.
