High Tech High International Review

High Tech High International opened in 2004 for grades 9th through 12th. High Tech High International challenges students with more than a basic curriculum. They learn what is expected of them not only in high school, but also what is needed for college life and in their community as well.

Along with core subjects students are exposed to a variety of other activities. Those include band, computer arts, video/film production, chorus, dance, photography, drawing/painting, Mandarin, Spanish, student council and government, community service, radio/video, yearbook, science and technology vocational classes. Athletics available are cross country, football, lacrosse, soccer, rock climbing ultimate Frisbee, golf, softball, track, baseball, P.E., swimming, tennis, volleyball and yoga.

Parents have split reviews of High Tech High International. Some like the new approach to learning, which takes away the books and relies heavily on note taking while others are concerned with the class schedules being split up with one class one semester and not the next. Students liked the small classes and individual instruction.

The Academic Performance Index showed a decrease in academic growth from 794 to 776. The statewide goal is 800.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.

The students at High Tech High International showed results that were mostly above average across all grades levels and exams. The lower than average scores were in 11th grade with 12% passing the Algebra I exam with the state at 15%. In addition, 10th grade had 35% of students that passed the Science exam while the state was at 53%.

The California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) is used to test 10th grade high school students’ skills in English language arts and mathematics. The students here excelled with 90% passing the Math exam. State average was 84%. The English exam showed 94% passing and the average was 83%.

High Tech High International is a focused school with a hard working curriculum. Contact the school for a tour and speak with their teachers today before enrolling your child.
