Frederick Douglass Academy High School Review

Frederick Douglass Academy High School opened in 2006 as a charter school to provide students in 9th through 12th grades with a college preparatory curriculum. The school offers small class sizes and personalized lesson plans to help students excel. The challenging college prep curriculum and environment helps to prepare students for their college years. The student body is predominantly African American at 95%, with the rest being 3% Hispanic or Latin, 1% White and 1% Pacific Islander.

Along with core subjects, the school offers extra curricular activities for students that wish to participate including theater, drawing, photography, film production, dance, chorus, computer arts, and band. Sports available are track, rugby, softball, physical education classes, football, baseball, cheerleading, and basketball. Other programs are yearbook, community service, newspaper, student council, and academic contests.

Parents are very glad the school opened in their area stating it was the best for their children. No parent had any negative comments regarding the school and explained that teachers are very devoted to helping students but expect them to do their best. Most students stated the school is preparing them for college and helping them with setting goals.

The Academic Performance Index showed a decline in academic growth from 647 to 646. The goal statewide is a score of 800.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.
The percentage of students passing the exams at Frederick Douglass Academy High School was below state averages in all grades and all subject matter.

The California High School Exit Exam tests 10th graders mastering skills in English language arts and mathematics. In English Language Arts 74% passed the exam with the state average at 83% and in math 74% passed the exam with the average at 84%.

The school is doing a fair job of providing students with the tools necessary to enter college. If you are considering the school for your child, it would be a good idea to learn more about the curriculum and ensure you are making the right decision for your child.
