Environmental Charter High School Review

Environmental Charter High School opened in Lawndale in 2001 for students in 9th through 12th grades. The school provides a college prep curriculum offering a group of students that share teachers as well as classes for at least two years. Along with curriculum, students are provided with outdoor education, overnight fieldtrips, project based learning, hands on exploration, and individualized lesson plans. The student population is diverse with 68% Hispanic or Latino, 19% African American, 5% Asian, 4% White, 2% Filipino, 1% Pacific Islander, and 2% undisclosed.

Along with core subjects, Environmental Charter High School offers extra curricular activities for students that wish to participate including dance, chorus, and drama. Sports offered include basketball, cheerleading, and softball. Other programs available are debate, community service, yearbook, and student council.

Most parents expressed their appreciation of the teachers, staff, and administration that are providing students with the opportunity to receive a quality education and be prepared for college. Students stated the school is excellent and the teachers are very helpful and caring. Most students and parents alike recommend the school.

The Academic Performance Index showed academic growth from 810 to 824. The goal statewide is a score of 800.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.
The percentage of students passing the exams at Environmental Charter High School was mainly above state average. The below average percentages were with students in 11th grade and the courses were algebra II and chemistry, with all other subjects being above average.

The California High School Exit Exam tests 10th graders mastering skills in English language arts and mathematics. The percentage of students passing the English Language Arts exam was 95% with the average at 83% and in math 96% with the average being 84%.

The school is providing students with the educational tools needed to succeed as well as the encouragement to ensure students become life long learners. To ensure the school is a good fit for your family, it would be a good idea to take a tour.
