Adelante Charter School Review

Adelante Charter School previously known as Cesar Chavez Charter School opened in 2000 in Santa Barbara for students in kindergarten through 6th grades. The school has an average enrollment of 115 students per year.

The school is a dual language school meaning that classes are taught in both English and Spanish providing students in a bilingual education. This type of education is being implemented in various schools to help students become bilingual, biliterate, and bicultural. In the beginning in the lower grades, students are taught in the target language for 90% of the class time and 10% in English. As the children progress to the higher grades, the time classes are taught in English increases until the day is split is half between English and Spanish.

Adelante Charter School is unique in that they offer music classes once per week as well as for 3rd and 4th grades dance instruction provided by the Santa Barbara Dance Institute and for 5th and 6th graders after school dance instruction for the annual production.

The students are measures academic growth not just by the grade they receive but also in their performance on benchmark assessments, their ability to work with others, motivation, age appropriate school habits, if assignments are completed, and if how they work independently.

Along with core subjects, Adelante Charter School also offers various extra curricular activities, which include computer arts, chorus, drawing, sculpture, physical education classes, community service, academic contests, and newspaper.

Parents are very impressed with the school environment that blends a home atmosphere with a structured learning environment. Teachers are caring and devoted that works well with each student to ensure they succeed. The bilingual school is perfect for most parents that want to see their children grow in a multicultural community. Parents are very involved in the school, which makes the school even more exciting for the community.

The results of the California Standards Tests were up and down according to the grade level and the subject matter. A few were above average while other results showed a below average score.

It would be in your best interest to learn more about the curriculum and the community as a whole prior to enrolling your child to make sure it is a good fit for your family and your child.
