The Standard Digital Video Workflow

  • Acquiring Video
    • Gathering together all the assets you’ll need to put together a video program
  • Capturing Video
    • The actual process of filming video for use in your projects
    • You’ll need to do this if you haven’t already from above
  • Organizing Clips
    • Keeping organized is extremely important, especially on larger jobs
  • Build Rough Cut
    • Useful to see the overall “flow” of the video program
    • Can also point out any gaps in the narrative that need to be addressed
    • Usually seen by the editor, producer and director
  • Place Transitions and Effects
    • Also includes fine-tuning any edit points you have made
    • Gives a better view of the completed program
  • Create Titles and Graphics
    • Usually done in conjunction with the other steps
    • By contract, union workers need their names displayed either at the beginning or end of a video program they’ve worked on
  • Mix Audio
    • Also includes adding background music
    • If creating for international market, usually need three types of track
      • Voice Actor track
      • Background Music Track
      • Foley (sound effects) track
  • Export Finished Video
    • Either to a file, a website, or a DVD/Blu-ray disc
