how is a*(xn-1)/n equivalent to a^n/n!?

I need to create a program where variance is determined from var.  write a script that determines Sn as a function of n, n>1 for the following data: x=[45 38 47 41 35 43] Answer [24.50 22.33 16.25 24.20 19.90].  I know that when i use var(x) it will return the 19.9 value because it is giving me the variance of the entire vector.  I need to create a for loop that lets me return the variance for n values, example n = 1 would be the variance of 45 and 38, i think.  Not really sure how to do this.
