Using Image Formats for the Web

  • There are 3 images formats that can be used on the web
  • If I open the optimization panel in Fireworks, you can see the 3 types listed
  • We choose what format works best for each image when we optimize them
  • Gifs can only store 256 colors
  • Gifs also allow transparent backgrounds
  • Gifs also allow animation
  • If I switch the format to jpg, you can see the optimization settings change
  • Jpgs store millions of colors
  • Jpgs do not allow transparent backgrounds or animation
  • Pngs come in different bit depths
