Addition & Subtraction Techniques

  • If the same number is added or subtracted from both sides of an inequality, the resulting inequality has the same solutions as the original one.
  • Use set builder notation to describe the solution set of an inequality.
  • The solutions to inequalities can also be shown by shading the solution set on a number line. Endpoints should be drawn as solid dots if they are part of the solution set, and open circles otherwise.

Addition & Subtraction Techniques

x − 14 ≤ 22
  • x − 14 + 14 ≤ 22 + 14
x ≤ 36
x + 17 > 54
x > 37
46 + y < 51
y < 5
15 ≥ 12 + x
3 ≥ x
18 + x ≤ 40
x ≤ 22
s + 87 ≤ 113
s ≤ 26
g − 11 > 21
g > 31
7 ≤ u − 16
23 ≤ u
37 < 19 + p
18 < p
63 ≥ d + 45
18 ≥ d
5h ≥ 4h − 4
h ≥ − 4
