Founded by Walter Rasmussen in 1900 in St. Paul, Minnesota, as the Rasmussen Practical School of Business, it began as an education center for the growing business class, in the good old days when electricity was still a new idea.  The school had opened its doors to train accounting and secretarial students. But after over 100 years of successful operation, times have changed and so has the school, which has grown multifold to envelop different educational streams and thousands of students. Along the way the name was changed and it has campuses in 25 locations throughout Illinois, Minnesota, Florida, North Dakota and Wisconsin, as well as online.

Rasmussen College, as a regionally accredited college, offers a wide range of degrees in popular and growing fields allowing students to work toward a happening career.  The School of Health Sciences offers Health Information Management; The School of Business offers Business Management with numerous specializations, Accounting, Public Accounting and Healthcare Management; The School of Justice Studies offers Criminal Justice with many specializations; The School of Nursing with RN to BSN; and The School of Technology and Design offers degrees in Computer Science, Digital Design and Animation along with Game and Simulation Programming.  Both two and four year degrees are offered. Recently, the school has also entered into a partnership with Deltak Edu to offer Master’s degrees.
