Valley Arts and Science Academy Review

Valley Arts and Science Academy opened in 2007 to provide families with an alternative to traditional school with an arts and music education with a personal instruction and hands on science experiments. The school serves students in kindergarten through 6th grades. The student body is diverse with a population of Hispanic, White, African American, Asian, American Indian, and Filipino.

Even though the school does not offer sports or student clubs, it does offer a variety of electives for students that wish to participate. These include physical education, computers, intervention, photography, leadership, creations & concoctions, beginner Spanish, garden, beginner strings, advanced strings, beginner band, concert choir, and advanced painting, to name a few.

The majority of parents are very satisfied with the school and teachers, however, a few parents stated that not all teachers are as proficient and may not be providing students with the education they need. Some noticed that a few teachers were just not that involved in their classroom, while others and most were completely devoted to their students. Students enjoy going to school but would really like to see a few sports added to the activities.

The Academic Performance Index increased 10 points to 677. Parents are not pleased that the score did not raise more and are very disappointed with the API statewide rank, which is 1.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.

The percentage of students passing the exams was below state averages across all grade levels and all subjects. Parents are talking with teachers and administration to learn how to raise the percentage of students passing the exams.

The school is providing a fair job of providing a quality education. Since the percentage of students, passing exams and the API score, it would be in your best interest to talk with other parents before enrolling your child.
