Urban Discovery Academy School Review

Urban Discovery Academy School opened in 2008 to provide families with students in kindergarten through 8th grades with an alternative to traditional school. The school works with the whole child with a project based learning method. Along with core subjects, the school offers a variety of other activities including visual arts, physical education, and other activities throughout the year. Parents are very happy with the before and after school programs. The school is diverse with the student body being White, African American, Hispanic, Asian, and Filipino.

The majority of parents really like the teachers and the curriculum as well as the teaching method. Some parents stated that principal can be rude at times and is not very friendly to students or parents. Some parents expressed that the academics is not that good and it is rare that students have any homework. There are plenty of extra curricular activities but sports are very weak. Students explained they like their teachers but would like to participate in other sports that are available.

The Academic Performance Index increased 40 points to 876. The statewide goal is 800. Parents are very happy with the raise in score and that the school is still above the goal.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.

The percentage of students passing the exams was mainly above state averages with the exception of 35% of 6th graders passed the math exam with the state average at 55%, and 37% of 7th graders passed the math exam with the state average at 52%. Parents were not really too concerned with the results.

The school is providing the educational tools students need to succeed and prepare for the remainder of their educational years. If you have any concerns, it would be a good idea to take a tour of the school before enrollment.
