Thurgood Marshall Middle School Review

Thurgood Marshall Middle School opened in 2007 for students in 6th through 8th grades. The school works with students to ensure they are prepared to attend one of the top 100 colleges in the US. The school provides a very rigorous and challenging curriculum with all students studying English, grammar, history, science, math, technology, art, music, physical education, and chess. The student body is predominantly African American.

At this time, the only student club available is student council. No other sports or activities are mentioned.

The majority of parents stated that the teachers are wonderful and are helping students succeed. When it comes to the office staff and administration, parents expressed that they need to communicate better with parents. Students stated that the work is hard but it is worth it. School is never boring and teachers are very helpful. Other students stated they would like the opportunity to participate in sports and hope the school will decide to add some type of sport soon.

The Academic Performance Index declined 6 points to 682. The statewide goal is 800. Parents were not happy at all with this drop and are even more disappointed with the 2 out of 10 ranking.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.

The percentage of students passing the exams was below state averages in all grade levels and all subjects. Math is the subject that really needs the most attention with percentages like 7% of 8th graders passing the Algebra I exam with the state average at 49%.

Since the exam scores and API ranking is not as good as other schools, it would be in your best interest to speak with other parents and teachers to learn more about the curriculum prior to enrolling your child.
