Tempe Preparatory Academy Review

Tempe Preparatory Academy opened in 2000 for students in 7th through 12th grades. This charter school has on average 325 students enrolled per year. The school curriculum utilizes the Socratic Model and encourages the involvement of parents. The Great Books is the baseline, which was created by Dr. Mortimer Adler. The ideas include truth, beauty, goodness, liberty, justice, and equality. There is no true set curriculum but the school stresses instilling the values of freedom, free elections, and free speech in a free society. Students have the opportunity to explore a large array of subjects.

the Socratic model is one in which an assignment is started by the teachers providing the material, however, the way in which the lesson goes forward depends on the questions asked and the answers given that often bring about other questions. Along with the teachings, students can participate in chorus, theater, dance, orchestra, baseball, basketball, cross-country, football, softball, soccer, track, volleyball, debate, yearbook, and Science & technology.

The majority of parents are as pleased with the school as they were when the school opened. The parents have noticed that the school discipline is almost nil with students not being punished or the punishment does not really fit the offense. Many state that the “in crowd” is often in control of the entire school with teachers turning a blind eye to offenses. Academics and personal attention is pretty much gone as well with most teachers only filling a spot was reported by a few parents. On the other hand, reviews a few years ago stated the school was outstanding and teachers, staff, and parents worked together to create a wonderful nurturing learning environment.

The school has not published any test scores including those for the AIMS exams. It would be in your best interest to talk with other parents that have students enrolled before enrolling your child.
