Student Choice High School is a charter school in Tempe that is for Native American students. The school provides a curriculum that blends a family style learning environment with only around 140 students enrolled per year in grades 9th through 12th grades. The school is just the right size to ensure that students can achieve the attention they need in an environment that is not crowded like traditional schools providing students with a safe learning environment. The majority of the classes have one teacher per 10 students to ensure the success of every student. The self-paced curriculum also provides students with the ability to work at their own pace which means they can learn at a level that makes them comfortable instead of trying to soak in as much as possible quickly often missing important information or facts.
The computer based instruction is what sets Student Choice High School apart from traditional schools as it allows students to learn at their own pace and be able to actually have the time to learn what they need before moving forward. Students will be able to work on subjects, as they desire instead of being forced to move onto another subject before they are ready or going ahead to another subject faster than sitting in a classroom waiting on a teacher to move the class to a different subject.
Teachers love working at Student Choice High School, as they know they are actually helping students succeed and achieve their goals due to the small class size and the attention they can provide. Parents are very happy with the opportunities the school offers and the way they are contributing to the community as a whole. Students expressed just how much they love the school and the teachers. There are no negative comments on this school by teachers, students, or parents.
The percentage of students that passed the AIMS series of exams is quite low when compared to state averages. In all core subjects the percentages were below state averages, however, the percentages have improved over the last few years. This is a good sign. It would still be best to question staff and administration regarding the curriculum and if they are working toward ensuring the students have the tools needed to pass the exams.
