Sonoran Science Academy – Tucson Review

Sonoran Science Academy opened their Tucson campus in 2001 for students in kindergarten through 12th grades. The curriculum used is a college prep/liberal arts that focuses on technology, science, and math. The school offers a close-knit community where students can excel via core subject material, advanced placement, college level courses, and dual enrollment.

Not only are students receiving a quality education but they can also join sports, clubs and activities including football, physical education classes, dance, photography, computer arts, yearbook, multimedia, drama, drawing, chorus, band, film production, basketball, softball, volleyball, tennis, newspaper, student council, science & technology, and yearbook.

Parents are pleased with the curriculum and the way in which the staff and administration always answered her questions and concerns. On the other hand, one mother was completed ignored when she wanted to talk with administration and that many times information sent from the school was incorrect. Other parents expressed their concern that the majority of the year was spent on working toward passing the AIMS series of exams and no science was taught at all unless it was going to be on the state exams. One parent stated the school is more interested in their ranking than they are with providing a quality education. There is a large group of parents and students that love the school and would not attend another school at all. They express the teachers and staff is very accommodating and work with students to ensure their success.

It may not do any good looking at the AIMS scores to see if the school is providing the educational tools needed to succeed. However, across all grades the percentage of students passing the exams in all core subjects was above state average. It would be best if you learn more about the curriculum and if the school actually only works on passing the AIMS exam or if the students are actually receiving a wide array of educational options before enrolling your child.
