Sonoran Science Academy – Phoenix Review

Sonoran Science Academy opened their Phoenix campus in 2004 for students in kindergarten through 8th grades. The college prep curriculum is also a liberal arts curriculum blended with math, science and technology. The importance of technology is growing and it is incorporated in the learning environment so students learn and are familiar with the use of a computer. The school offers core subjects, college level classes, advanced placement, and college dual enrollment courses.

Along with the core subjects, students can join sports, extracurricular activities, and clubs including football, physical education classes, dance, photography, computer arts, yearbook, multimedia, drama, drawing, chorus, band, film production, basketball, softball, volleyball, tennis, newspaper, student council, science & technology, and yearbook.

Remarks from parents regarding the Sonoran Science Academy is not of a positive nature expressing the school is for Muslims or geared toward Muslim children. All students that are not Muslim must wear uniforms; teachers yell at students, students eat lunch outside in all kinds of weather without any shelter. Uniforms for girls are robes that completely cover their body. A few parents pulled their children out of the school due to issues where their children were being bullied, as they were not of a specific faith. The negative remarks went so far as to saying that the students are in control of the school with teachers and administration turning their head to the abuse that is being dished out by some students. When parents took the issue to administration, the entire issue was ignored. Only one positive comment has been noted from a student that expressed the teachers were very helpful and they enjoy going to the school.

If you look at the AIMS series of exams you will see that the percentage of third graders were above average in reading, but below average in other core subjects. Fourth graders were above average in writing but below in other core subjects. Fifth graders were above average in reading, but below in other core subjects. Sixth and seventh graders were below average in all core subjects. Eighth graders were average in all subjects except for science in which they were above average. Tenth graders were below state average in all core subjects.

With the remarks of parents and the AIMS test scores it would be in your best interest to take a tour of the school and learn more about the curriculum as well as the security issues and bullying policies before enrolling your child.
