Sonoma Charter School Review

Sonoma Charter School opened in 1994 to offer students in kindergarten through 8th grades with an alternative to traditional school settings. The school uses the Montessori method, which does not use chairs and desks but provides small classrooms with hands on teaching materials.

The school does not have student clubs, sports, or extra curricular activities but does have after school programs and several field trips per year.

Parents are very pleased with the Montessori Method used by the school and state that their children are doing quite well. Most parents stated their children love going to school and their teachers. Students love their teachers and all the fun activities the school plans. Most parents agree that the balance of work and play are great at the school.

The Academic Performance Index showed a decline of 10 points to 821. The statewide goal is 800. Parents were not happy with the drop in points but were not concerned at all since they are still above the statewide goal.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.

The percentage of students passing the exams was mixed. Examples include 69% of 4th graders passed the English exam with the state average at 67%, 16% of 5th graders passed the math exam with the state at 65%, and 73% of 6th graders passed the English exam with the state average at 59%. Even with a few of the percentages before state averages, the school is providing a quality education. Parents expressed that this helps teachers know the areas that need work and which students may need a bit more guidance.

Overall, the school providing a fair job of providing the educational tools and guidance students need to succeed. If you have any concerns, it would be a good idea to talk with teachers and ensue the learning environment is a good fit for your child before enrolling.
