Sky Mountain Charter School Review

Sky Mountain Charter School opened in 2007 to serve students in kindergarten through 12th grades with a very unique approach to learning. The school has huge parent involvement in which parents actually work with teachers to decide the best educational approach is used with their child. The educational approaches offered include classical, delayed academic, great books, international baccalaureate, living books, Montessori, traditional, Waldorf, unschooling, and unit study. Parents can also select from home based or community based instruction.

At this time, the school does not offer extra curricular activities, student clubs, or sports. Students are disappointed that they do not have the opportunity to participate in sports or clubs such as student council.

Parents are very involved in the school including a parent council. Parents expressed that the school is a wonderful choice that is truly helping their children succeed. The students like the school and teachers but would like to see other activities outside the core curriculum.

The Academic Performance Index is 775. The statewide goal is 800. Parents were too concerned as the school is working toward reaching the statewide goal.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.

The percentage of students passing the exams was mixed. Examples include 68% of 5th graders passed the English exam with the state average at 63%, 44% of 6th graders passed the math exam with the state at 55%, and 74% of 7th graders passed the English exam with the state at 62%. Even with a few of the percentages before state averages, the school is providing a quality education. Parents expressed that the teachers are working with students to improve these figures.

the California High School Exit Exam tests 10th graders mastering skills in English language arts and mathematics. In English, 91% of students passed the English exam with the state at 83% and in math 80% with the state average at 84%. Parents were very pleased with these percentages.

Overall, the school is doing an excellent job of providing students with a quality education. If you have any concerns, it would be a good idea to talk with teachers and ensure the learning environment and the curriculum is a good fit for your child before enrolling.
