Sierra Hills Arts and Sciences Charter Academy opened in 2010 to provide students in kindergarten through 3rd grades with an education in a small country style atmosphere. All students move up as a group through each grade level and then onto Welmar Hills School for 4th through 8th grades. The curriculum focuses on science and the arts.
At this time, there are no student clubs or sports for students to join.
Students enjoy attending school and like their teachers. Parents expressed how much they truly love the learning environment and atmosphere at the school. Most parents stated that the teachers and staff are very caring and work with students on a personal level.
The Academic Performance Index showed a decline of 3 points to 793. The statewide goal is 800. Parents were not concerned with the slight drop as their children enjoy attending school and they see how teachers work with each student to help them succeed.
The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.
The percentage of students passing the exams was mixed. Examples include 62% of 2nd graders passed the English Language Arts exam with the state average at 58% and in math, 67% passed the math exam with the state average at 64%.
Overall, the school is providing a quality and caring learning environment. If you have any concerns, it would be a good idea to take a tour of the school before enrollment.
