Sherwood Montessori Review

Sherwood Montessori opened in 2010 to serve students in Kindergarten through 8th grades. The school provides small classrooms with an average enrollment of 120 students annually. The school offers a learning curriculum based on the Montessori method that is founded on the principle that students should be self-directed and that the school educates the whole child instead of just providing academic studies.

The school does not offer extra curricular activities or sports at this time.

Parents expressed they really love the Montessori classroom that is completely different from traditional school settings with no desk or chairs but tables with work areas. Teachers do not stand in front of the class and give lectures, but move from student to student to help each child on a personal level. The school is great as parents stated without any bells where students are taught to care about one another and work with parents to become more involved in the education of their children. Students really going to school and like their teachers.

The Academic Performance Index showed an increase of 13 points to a score of 820. The statewide goal is 800. Parents are very pleased with the number.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.

The percentage of students passing the exams was both above and below the state averages across all the grade levels. For example, 69% of 2nd graders passed the math exam with the state average at 64%, 42% of 5th graders passed the science exam with the state average at 60%, and 100% of 7th graders passed the English exam with the state at 62%.
The school is doing a wonderful job of providing students with an exceptional education in a caring learning environment. If you have any questions regarding the Montessori Method, it would be a good idea to tour the school.
