Sherman Thomas Charter High School Review

Sherman Thomas Charter High School opened in 2003 to serve students in 9th through 11th grades. The school has an annually enrollment of around 50 students which provides non-classroom standards based independent study with direct teacher instruction.

At this time, the school does not offer any extra curricular activities, sports, or student clubs. Parents and students alike expressed they would like to see more events and activities where students can spend time with their classmates.

Parents and students stated that the teachers are very caring and work with each student on a personal basis to ensure they succeed. Parents expressed they would like to see more parent involvement and activities. Some students would love to play sports or have options such as student government or technology clubs.

The Academic Performance Index showed an increase of 12 points to a score of 710. The statewide goal is 800. Even though the score is still below the statewide goal, parents were very pleased to see the increase.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades. The percentage of students passing the exams was not available at the time of this writing.

The California High School Exit Exam tests 10th graders mastering skills in English language arts and mathematics. The percentage of students passing the exams was 67% in English with the state average at 83% and in math 87% with the state average at 84%. Students were very pleased that in math more students passed the exam than the average across the state.

With comments of parents and students, the school is doing a fair job of preparing students for college or to join the work force. On the other hand, since not all of the exams were available it would be a good idea to speak with teachers and the administration to learn more about the percentages of students that are passing the exams before enrolling your child. You may also want to learn if the school is planning to add extra curricular activities in the future.
