Sherman Oaks Elementary Charter Review

Sherman Oaks Elementary Charter opened in 2011 to serve students in Kindergarten through 5th grades. The school provides a small sized learning setting for a more personal and individualized school environment. The student population is diverse with 56% White, 24% Hispanic, 10% African American, 5% Asian, 2% Filipino, 1% American Indian, and 1% unspecified.

Along with core subjects, the school offers extracurricular activities and a few sports for students that wish to participate. This includes musical theater, talent show, homework club, flag football, basketball, softball, soccer, dance team, and track & field. Some students stated they would like to see more student clubs offered such as student council. Parents really like the musical theater and talent show that allows students to express themselves.

The majority of parents are very pleased with the teachers and curriculum stating that the teachers are very attentive and really care about their students. Most parents stated that the school has great parent involvement in the classrooms and at events, which makes the school more like family than a school. On the other hand, some parents believe the school has too much parent involvement with the parents making the decisions that should be addressed by the administration instead of parents. A few parents are concerned with the new principal that does not seem as involved in the previous principal and that things have gone down hill since this change with the atmosphere changing from family style to cold and hard.

The Academic Performance Index showed a showed a 13 point increase to 868. The statewide goal is 800. Parents are pleased with the number and the increase over last year’s figure.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to second through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.

The percentage of students passing the California Standards Tests was above state averages across all the grade levels.

Sherman Oaks Elementary Charter is providing an excellent education for students and is preparing them for the remainder of their school years. If you have any concerns, it would be a good idea to talk with other parents that have students attending the school.
