Sequoia Village School Review

Sequoia Village School opened in 1999 as a public charter school that is tuition free offering programs that exceed the standards set by the state of Arizona. The school offers the educational tools needs for students in kindergarten through 12th grades to succeed with small class size where they can receive the attention they need to reach their goals. Along with core subjects, the school also offers a gift program for students that learn at a faster pace as well as many activities students can participate in if they desire including drama, photography, dance, band, film production, band, basketball, volleyball, track, football, newspaper, student council, multimedia, debate, and science & technology. For students that prefer an even more alternative education than attending a brick and mortar facility, the school also offers an online program where students can achieve their diploma.

Students love the school both online and offline. They express the teachers and staff is caring and helps them with any issues that arise. Students that are attending the online school have the opportunity to visit the school at any time for any reason including tutoring. Parents are very pleased with the school and state their children are advanced now after attending the school. Only one complaint regarding the school was that they are not equipped properly to handle students with special needs and the attention is not given to special need students, as this parent would like.

To learn if the school is actually meeting the state standards, a look at the AIMS series of exams can give a clue. The percentage of third graders that passed the exams was below average in core subjects. Fourth graders were below average except in writing in which they were above average. Fifth and Sixth graders were above average in core subjects. Seventh graders were below average except in math in which they were above average. Eighth graders were below average except in science where they were above average.

The school environment is one that parents and students enjoy and are learning. However, you should still speak with teachers and other parents to learn more about the school especially with the low percentage of students passing the AIMS series of exams.
