Sequoia Charter School Review

Sequoia Charter School opened in 2006 to offer at risk students with a year round school for students in 7th through twelfth grades. Along with core subjects, the school offers specialized programs for students with special education needs including emotional behavioral disabilities, health impairments, and specific learning disabilities. Extra curricular activities available are painting and video production. The school does not offer any sports, which is a huge disappointment for many students. The diverse student is comprised of 56% White, 22% African American, 18% Hispanic or Latino, 2% Asian, and 2% unspecified.

The community is happy that the school opened in their area and is doing an excellent job of providing students with the extra attention they need to succeed. Most parents rave on the small class sizes and the devoted teachers. Some students stated they like their teachers but would really enjoy more activities.

The Academic Performance Index showed a decline of 53 points from the previous year to a score of 492. The statewide goal is 800. Parents were very disappointed with this score. Most are talking with administration and teachers to learn how to raise the score.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.

The percentage of students passing the exams was not available at the time of this writing.

The California High School Exit Exam tests 10th graders mastering skills in English language arts and mathematics. The percentage of students passing the exams was not available.

With the API dropping such a large number and the other exam scores not available, it would be a good idea to talk with administration and teachers prior to enrolling your child.
