Sedona Charter School Review

The Sedona Charter School was established in 1995 and is the oldest charter school in the state. The school offers a quality education to 160 students in grades kindergarten through 8th grade. The small close-knit environment provides a family feel offering students a rigorous and challenging curriculum. The school expects all students to do their best and to achieve greatness through high standards. Along with core subjects, the school understands the importance of team sports, social activities, and creativity thus they also offer such activities as dance, drama, drawing, chorus, orchestra, computer arts, cheerleading, basketball, lacrosse, football, yoga, martial arts, yearbook, and Science & technology.

Parents have mixed opinions regarding the school. Most state that the lower elementary classrooms and teachers are doing an excellent job while the upper grades are doing a poor job of providing a quality education. The main courses they felt students were lacking in were math, spelling, and writing. The campus is very safe and students do enjoy going to school, however, most parents believe the curriculum is below standards.

On the other hand, some parents are very thrilled with the curriculum and the staff. One parent was very pleased with the chance students have to explore when their schoolwork is finished along with offering children the opportunity to use a program on computers. One student that attended the school was very disappointed as he was behind in most classes when he enrolled in another school. He stated that the honors program at the school was below average and that he was quite a bit behind and had to catch up.

The percentage of students passing the AIMS exams may shed some light on the curriculum. The lower grades the students are passing reading, writing, and science with above average percentages, however, math was quite a bit below state averages. The upper elementary did about the same being above average in writing, reading, and science but below average in math. Eighth graders pulled out strong though with percentages above average in all core subjects.

To learn if the school is a good fit for your child, you should take a tour and talk with teachers and other parents.
