Sebastopol Independent Charter School Review

Sebastopol Independent Charter School opened in 1995 to offers families an alternative to traditional schools. The school uses the Waldorf curriculum. Along with core subjects, the school provides extra curricular activities and sports, which include basketball, volleyball, ceramics, painting, choir, orchestra, and drama. The school serves students in kindergarten through 8th grades.

Parents expressed that the teachers are dedicated, caring, and brilliant. All teachers show students respect and provide fun and entertaining education models. Several students said they love the activities the school offers such as singing, painting, and physical education classes. Some parents were not excited about the school and stated that the school does not work with each student to ensure their success and some students are falling behind. Some parents even stated that the school is only average.

The Academic Performance Index showed a decline of 13 points from the previous year to a score of 858. The statewide goal is 800. Parents were not happy at all with the drop but are still happy that the school is above the statewide goal.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.

The percentage of students passing the exams was mixed with some above average and some below. Examples include 87% of 4th graders passed the English exam with the state at 67%, 96% of 6th graders passed the English exam with the average at 59%, and 86% of 7th graders passed the math exam with the state at 52%.

Overall, the school is providing students with the educational tools need to be prepared for high school. It would still be a good idea to talk with parents and take a tour of the school before enrollment.
