Santiago Middle School Review

Santiago Middle School opened in 1995 as a charter school to offer families the opportunity to provide their children with a high quality education that will help them succeed academically, personally, and socially. The school prides itself of offering a safe and nurturing environment for students in 7th and 8th grades. The student body is diverse with 55% Hispanic or Latino, 31% White, 6% Asian, 2% Filipino, 1% African American, and 3% unspecified.

The one complaint from the majority of students is the lack of student clubs, sports, and extra curricular activities. The school is providing a good education, but most students would like other activities. All parents that expressed their opinions stated that their children had a wonderful two years at the school. Students that have now graduated and are attending high school explained they really miss the school and the teachers that were excellent. They stated they were treated with respect and were very kind. Parents love the curriculum and the safe learning environment.

The Academic Performance Index showed an increase of 20 points from the previous year to a score of 836. The statewide goal is 800. Parents could not be more pleased with the score. Teachers are highly praised for their efforts to stay above the statewide goal.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.

The percentage of students passing the exams was mainly above state averages except for a few math courses that were just under the average. Parents and teachers alike are working to help improve the percentage for the upcoming year.

The school is overall providing an exceptional education with all the tools students need to prepare for high school and beyond. To ensure the school is a good fit for your child, you should take a tour of the school.
