Santa Rosa Charter Academy Review

Santa Rosa Charter Academy opened in 2009 to offer families an alternative to traditional schools. The school is part of the Partnerships to Uplift Communities group of schools offering students that often attend a school that is overcrowded and low achieving schools. The school stresses college prep education to help students in the urban areas excel and go onto to college. The school serves students in 6th through 8th grades.

The school focuses on academics and other activities that cater to the whole child. Parents and students alike expressed they would like to see more sports and other activities besides just the core subjects.

Parents believe the school is working on providing a quality education, but that the school has a ways to go. The curriculum is okay but parents noticed that the API dropped quite a bit and this is not a good sign. Students noticed a change in the last year within the classroom, which has become a bit lax.

The Academic Performance Index showed a decline of 40 points from the previous year to a score of 760. The statewide goal is 800. Parents are not happy at all with this huge drop and are working with teachers and administration to learn how to raise the score.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.

The percentage of students passing the exams was only available for 6th graders with 57% passing English with the average at 59% and in math 67% with the state average at 55%. Parents were proud of the percentages that passed the exams.

A few mixed signals are seen with the school. A drop in the API, but percentage of students passing exams were close to average or above average. The school is doing a fair job of providing a quality education; however, you should visit the school to ensure it is a good fit for your child.
