Santa Clarita Valley International Review

Santa Clarita Valley International opened in 2008 as a charter school to provide students in kindergarten through 9th grades with a quality education. The school offers a variety of instructional and curriculum models, which, include project based, multi-aged, internships, International Baccalaureate, individually guided instruction, independent study, hybrid, gifted, and college prep.

Along with core subjects, Santa Clarita Valley International offers an extra curricular activities, sports, and student clubs. These include baseball, basketball, cross-country, equestrian, flag football, golf, martial arts, lacrosse, soccer, volleyball, design, band, chorus, instrumental music lessons, jazz band, orchestra, graphics, film production, girl scouts, yearbook, and drama club.

Parents expressed they truly like the field of study offered at the school as well as the personal attention given by teachers to students on an individual basis. The project learning and small class size were also at the top of the positive remarks. Students expressed that the teachers are very nice and that they enjoy attending school. One parent did state that there are a few issues with some students being disrespectful to teachers and there is a lack of discipline and order.

The Academic Performance Index showed a decline of 25 points from the previous year to a score of 763. The statewide goal is 800. Parents were quite disappointed to see the huge drop and are talking with administration and teachers to improve the score.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.

The percentage of students passing the exams was mixed. Examples include 66% of 3rd graders passed the English exam with the state average at 48% and 52% of 7th graders passed the math exam with the average at 52%.

The California High School Exit Exam tests 10th graders mastering skills in English language arts and mathematics. The percentage of students passing the English exam was 88% in English with the average at 83% and in math 78% passed with the average at 84%.

The school is working toward improvement and most parents are pleased with the curriculum and teachers. It would still be in your best interest to take a tour of the school before enrolling your child.
