Santa Barbara Middle Charter School Review

Santa Barbara Middle Charter School opened in 1997 for students in 6th through 8th grades. The curriculum is based on the Santa Barbara School’s Student Goals and Learner Objectives and California State Frameworks. The models of education that are blended into the curriculum include Humanistic, Montessori, and Waldorf. The subjects are taught via stories, music, storytelling, art, drama, and the fine arts. The school also provides resources for home school families.

Parents are very pleased with the teaching formats offered as well as the various other courses that allow students to be creative. Students on the other hand are not as pleased with the extra curricular activities as the school does not offer sports at this time. Students expressed they like their teachers and the curriculum is challenging, however, teachers are very kind and treat students with respect.

The Academic Performance Index showed an increase of 52 points from the previous year to a score of 828. The statewide goal is 800. Parents are very encouraged with the score.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.

The percentage of students passing the exams was mixed. Examples include 78% of 6th graders passed the English Language Arts with the state average 59% and 38% of 7th graders passed the math exam with the average at 52%.

Parents and students like are very happy with the school, teachers, and staff. With the comments of parents, the school is providing a quality education. If you have any worries, you should take a tour of the school prior to enrollment.
