Santa Barbara Elementary Charter School Review

Santa Barbara Elementary Charter School opened in 1993 to offer families an alternative to traditional school settings. The school serves students in kindergarten through 8th grades. The curriculum is based on the Santa Barbara School’s Student Goals and Learner Objectives and California State Frameworks. The models of education that are blended into the curriculum include Humanistic, Montessori, and Waldorf. The subjects are taught via stories, music, storytelling, art, drama, and the fine arts.

The school offers various events and other activities throughout the school year. Many students would like to see sports included in the programs. The main compliment on the school by most parents is the fact that all major decisions of the school are created by a board of administrators, teachers, and parents. Most parents are very pleased with the devotion and caring teachers that truly want each child to succeed. Students really enjoy going to school and like their teachers. Parents are very involved with the school and some expressed that it is great for home school families that can have their children attend the school for extra courses.

The Academic Performance Index showed an increase of 26 points from the previous year to a score of 816. The statewide goal is 800. Parents are very pleased with the increase.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.

The percentage of students passing the exams was mixed. Examples include 54% of 2nd graders passed the English exam with the state average at 58%, 68% of 3rd graders passed the English exam with the average at 48%, and 50% of 4th graders passed the math exam with the state at 71%.

The school is doing a fair job of providing students with a caring and nurturing environment. Math scores were a bit below average; however, parents stated that teachers are working on improving the percentages. You should take a tour of the school to ensure the learning environment is one that will help your child succeed.
