San Diego Virtual School Review

San Diego Virtual School opened in 2010 to provide students with the opportunity to graduate from high school while doing all their course study online. The school provides a curriculum that fits the needs of each student on a personal basis. Along with this, all students have access to a credentialed teacher in every subject. Students that enjoy the arts will also be able to receive academic credit for performance work that can be added to their curriculum.

Parents are very pleased with the school and stated that the school is providing their children with a wonderful opportunity. Students love the flexible scheduling and caring teachers that are available when they need extra help at any time of the day or night. The major complaint of students is that the school does not offer any type of activities or events.

The Academic Performance Index is 693. Parents expressed they would like to see the score increase and are working with teachers to see how to improve this score next year.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.

The percentage of students passing the exams was mixed. Examples include 65% of 9th graders passed the English Language Arts exam with the state average at 57% and 36% of 10th graders passed the science exam with the state at 53%.

The California High School Exit Exam tests 10th graders mastering skills in English language arts and mathematics. The percentage of students passing the English exam was 86% in English with the average at 83% and in math 81% passed with the average at 84%.

If you are considering a virtual school, you will need to determine if your child is willing to work independently in order to succeed. You should talk with teachers and other parents to get a feel for the school before enrolling your child.
