San Diego Neighborhood Homeschools Review

San Diego Neighborhood Homeschools opened in Oceanside in 2009 to provide families that wish to home school their children with the guidance and support from credentialed teachers and staff to help them succeed. The school serves students in kindergarten through 12th grades. The school provides resources as well as a curriculum based on the standards set forth by the state.

Parents love the fact that their own private teacher meets with them and the children to assess, plan, assign, review all completed work, and re-evaluate the learning process so parents know the right direction to take to help their children receive a quality education. All lesson plans and learning goals are individualized which makes learning fun for each student. Students really love learning at home. Parents, students, and teachers meet once per month for students in kindergarten through 8th grades and weekly for high school students.

The only negative comment regarding the school is the fact that they do not offer any type of events or social activities for students to join. The curriculum and support is wonderful as stated by parents.

The Academic Performance Index showed an increase of 39 points from the previous year to a score of 769. The statewide goal is 800. Parents were very pleased to see the large increase and are working with teachers to improve the score.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades. The California High School Exit Exam tests 10th graders mastering skills in English language arts and mathematics.

The percentage of students passing the exams was not available at the time of this writing.

If you are considering home school, it would be a good idea to talk with teachers and administration to learn how many of their students are meeting state standards for graduation before enrolling your child.
