Sage Academy Review

Sage Academy is a tuition free charter school for students in kindergarten through 6th grades. The school offers an energetic campus as well as one with majestic views of Lookout Mountain, Moon Mountain, and Shaw Butte/North Mountain. The school opened in 2007 and on average has just under 45 students enrolled per year.

Sage Academy offers individualized learning plans, small class size, uniforms, technology classes, before school care, after school care, hot breakfast & lunch programs, character education, full day kindergarten, along with an on-site preschool and day care. The school also provides after school sports including cheerleading, karate, softball, soccer, basketball, flag football, and football.

Remarks from parents are quite mixed. Some parents state the school and teachers are doing a remarkable job educating their children, while another parents expressed that when her child was placed in another school that he was behind 2 years in academics. The school offers a 4-day school week with no homework. Some parents expressed that the school has more playtime that actually doing schoolwork. Correspondence with teachers and staff is also nonexistence as one parent pointed out.

To see if the school is meeting the state requirements, a look at the percentage of students that passed the AIMS series of exams should help. The percentage of 3rd graders that passed the exams was below state average. In reading and science, all 4th graders passed the exams; however, writing and math were below state average. Then 5th graders were below average in all core subjects. Sixth graders showed better in writing and math being above average, but below average in reading. 7th graders were below average in all core subjects. 8th graders were above average in all core subjects.

With the scores jumping around from grade to grade, it would be in your best interest to talk with the school and teachers to learn more. Maybe a few teachers are not providing the educational tools needed to pass the exams or there could be other reasons the percentage of students passing is so sporadic.
