Rocketship Mateo Sheedy Elementary School Review

Rocketship Mateo Sheedy Elementary School opened in 2007 for students in kindergarten through 5th grades. The school offers a college prep program to eliminate the achievement gap in low-income neighborhoods. The student body is diverse with 91% Hispanic or Latino, 4% Asian, 2% White, 1% African American, 1% Filipino, 1% Pacific Islander, and 1% unspecified. The school offers accelerated credit learning as well as honors track. The special schedule available is a longer school day and block scheduling.

At this time, Rocketship Mateo Sheedy Elementary School does not offer extra curricular activities, sports, or student clubs. This is a huge disappointment for several students that would like the opportunity to interact with their friends outside of the classroom.

When it comes to opinion of parents, the comments are diverse. Some parents stated the school is exceptional and that their children are doing so much better after they started to school here. On the other hand, some parents expressed that the school is only concerned with their API score and do not allow students to be creative or have their own ideas. The one good thing that most parents liked was the fact that the teacher does a home visit before the student starts attending school. This allows the teacher to get to know the family and the student better. Students stated they like their teachers but want to see more activities.

The Academic Performance Index showed an increase of 31 points from the previous year to a score of 924. The statewide goal is 800. Parents could not be more pleased with the score, however, some parents expressed that there is too much effort placed on the score than the individual needs of the students.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.

The percentage of students passing the exams was above average across the board in all grade levels and all subjects. Parents stated that this is a sign that the teachers are doing an exceptional job of providing their students with a quality education.

With scores and percentages as seen above, you can rest assured the school is providing students with an excellent education that will ensure they are prepared for college or to join the workforce upon graduation. However, if you have any concerns it would be a good idea to visit the school to ensure the learning environment is one that will fit the needs of your child.
