Rocketship Discovery Preparatory Review

Rocketship Discovery Preparatory opened in 2011 for students in kindergarten through 5th grades. The school offers a college prep program for students that are low income to ensure they have the same opportunities of students across the state to enter a four-year college. The school teaches, reinforces and celebrates five core values, which include respect, responsibility, persistence, empathy and creative expression. The school offers special scheduling such as block scheduling and longer school day. The curriculum models used include direct instruction, blended learning, and core knowledge.

Along with core subjects, the school offers cheerleading, soccer, drawing, and dance. Many students stated they would like to see more sports offered as well as clubs.

The opinion of parents is very mixed with some loving the school and others stating that the school has a high turn over of teachers. Even among the parents that like the school, staff, and teachers stated that the amount of homework is too much as it does not leave their children much room for socializing. Some parents like the fact that it is mandatory for parents to volunteer their time at the school, however, some parents stated that while volunteering they can really see the issues that the school needs to work on such as some of the behavior of a few students. Students really the school and teachers, but are not fond of all the homework and lack of activities.

The Academic Performance Index was not available at the time of this writing. The statewide goal is 800.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.

The percentage of students passing the exams was up and down. Examples include 52% of 2nd graders passed the English exam with the average at 58% and 52% of 3rd graders passed the English exam with the state average at 48%. Other grade percentages were not available.

With scores and percentages not being available and the comments of parents, it would be a good idea to take a tour of the school before enrolling your child.
