River Montessori Elementary Charter Review

River Montessori Elementary Charter opened in 2009 to provide an alternative educational opportunity for families. The school is based on Montessori programs that work with the whole child instead of just what is found in books. The school offers noncompetitive activities, self-direction, and real life learning experiences. The school serves around 160 students per year in grades first through fifth.

River Montessori Elementary Charter does not offer student clubs, extra curricular activities, or sports. However, the school provides a variety of activities within the Montessori Method that excites students and provides them with the desire to learn such as gardening.

The majority of parents really love the school, the guides, and staff stating that it is more like family than a school. Many parents expressed how much they like the learning environment that does not have students sitting at a desk but involved in activities that help them learn. A few parents love the way the school teaches using the environment with hiking and watching animals where they call home. As parents explained, the school is all about preserving the earth, community, belonging to a Green team, and respect. Students love going to school and do not want to miss one day, which is the main reason parents are very happy with the school.

The Academic Performance Index showed a decline of 6 points from the previous year to a score of 829. The statewide goal is 800. Parents are very pleased with the score and are proud of their children.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.

The percentage of students passing the exams was mixed with percentages being above and below state averages. A few examples include 41% of 2nd graders passed the math exam with the state average at 64%, 74% of 4th graders passed the English exam with the average at 67%, and 65% of 6th graders passed the math exam with the state at 55%.

Overall, River Montessori Elementary Charter is providing an exceptional educational for students to succeed. If you were not familiar with the Montessori Method, it would be in your best interest to take a tour of the school.
