Rio Valley Charter School opened in 2010 to provide the community with an alternative to traditional schools with home school and independent study available. The classes are offered weekly with a small class size of 10-12 students. The school serves students in Kindergarten through 12th grades. The school prepares students for college as well as high school with critical thinking and interpersonal skills.
Along with core subjects, the school offers a unique approach to learning with individualized instruction, computer and science workshops and art classes for students to show and develop their creativity. For the Kindergarten through 5th grade students field trips are offered plus guest teacher experiences. Some students stated they would like to have more extra curricular activities and sports offered.
Parents are thrilled with the curriculum as the school offers a great deal of freedom to learn. Not every child learns the same way and the school realizes that and promotes it. This gives parents more family time. The students love their teachers saying that they are dedicated, nice, smart and innovative with the lessons.
The Academic Performance Index showed an increase of 49 points from the previous year to a score of 638. The statewide goal is 800. Parents are glad that the school had such a large increase but would like to see the score improve.
The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.
The percentage of students passing the exams was a mixture of test results above and below the state averages. This was across the 2nd through 11th grade exams. Parents are working with teachers to help their children improve with exams.
California uses the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) to test high school students’ skills in English language arts and mathematics. The students at Rio Valley Charter School showed high results, but still fell below the state averages for both exams.
The school is providing students with an education unlike any other. If you think your child would excel under this type of learning do not hesitate to take a tour of Rio Valley Charter School.
