Ridgecrest Charter School Review

Ridgecrest Charter School opened in 2001 to serve students in Kindergarten through 8th grades. The school strives for academic excellence with a back to basics focus. The curriculum is based upon the Core Knowledge Sequence.

Along with core subjects, the school offers sports, assemblies and other extracurricular activities. This includes clubs like art, chess, cooking, oral languages, science, student council and yearbook. The sports program includes junior Olympics, volleyball and basketball. Students and parents are happy that there are activities to participate in, but would like more choices. Some students mentioned they would like to participate in baseball.

Parents are thrilled with the variety with the curriculum and the teachers that focus on succeeding and engaging each child. The school was built upon high expectations and that is what is expected. Parents love the fact that the teachers expect students do work hard. The test scores were another high point as they have been increasing each year. The students love going to school each day and say that their teachers listen to them.

The Academic Performance Index showed an increase of 19 points from the previous year to a score of 845. The statewide goal is 800. Parents are pleased with the number and very happy with the increase.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.

The percentage of students passing the exams was both above and below the state averages across the 2nd through 8th grade exams. The majority of the exams were passed with the only a few below state averages which shows teachers where the emphasis should be to improve next year.

The school is providing students with an education that the parents can appreciate. For more information and to schedule a tour, visit the school and talk with teachers.
