Richard Merkin Middle Academy Review

Richard Merkin Middle Academy opened in 2005 to provide the community and students with an education that is part of the Alliance College-Ready Public Schools. The school serves students in 6th through 8th grades. The school prepares students for high school, college, and the workforce. College prep is part of the curriculum.

Along with core subjects, the school offers sports and other extracurricular activities for its students. This includes student council, college and career club, football, soccer, volleyball and basketball. Parents and students alike are glad the charter school provides some activities but would like to see more options.

Parents are thrilled with the curriculum that offers college prep and the teachers and staff that are awesome and dedicated to learning. The parents also love the principal. The students love going to school each day and are very happy to be attending Richard Merkin Middle Academy. Many stated they have a great support system with their studies. Some students stated they like the various activities and events that are held throughout the year.

The Academic Performance Index showed a decrease of 10 points from the previous year to a score of 748. The statewide goal is 800. Parents are pleased with the increase, but are hoping that the school gets the number up to the state average or even beyond that.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.

The percentage of students passing the exams was a mix of results above and below the state averages across the 6th, 7th and 8th grade exams. For example on the 8th grade Algebra I exam only 3% of students passed against the state average of 49%.

The school is providing students with a fair education with a dedicated staff that truly cares. However, with some exams being quite a bit below state averages, it would be a good idea to learn more about the curriculum and if the school is a good fit for your child.
