Port of Los Angeles High School (POLAH) Review

Port of Los Angeles High School (POLAH) opened in 2005 to provide the community with an alternative to traditional schools with a focus on international maritime studies. The school serves students in 9th through 12th grades. The school offers a college prep program as well.

Along with core subjects, the school offers a variety of sports and other extracurricular activities for its students to participate. This includes ASB, yearbook, a variety of clubs from math, drums and peace to card, creative writing and foreign language to name a few. As for athletics there is baseball, basketball, cheer, cross country, dance, sailing, soccer, softball, run LA and volleyball.

Parents are thrilled with the curriculum at the school and the focus on college prep. The staff and teachers were rated top notch with a score for the school of 9 out of 10 on the internet. The students also liked their teachers and the variety of activities that the school offers. Parents expressed that teachers care about the students and want to see them succeed. Students are very happy with the curriculum as well as the many activities offered.

The Academic Performance Index showed an increase of 49 points from the previous year to a score of 840. The statewide goal is 800. Parents are pleased with the number and the increase from last year’s number.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.

The percentage of students passing the exams was a mix of lows and highs as compared to the state averages across the 9th, 10th and 11th grade exams.

California uses the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) to test high school students’ skills in English language arts and mathematics. The students at Port of Los Angeles High School (POLAH) did amazing well with results of 96% and 97%.

The school is providing students with an exceptional education that involves parents as well. For more information to see if the school would be a great fit for your family schedule a tour and meet with the teachers.
