Pioneer Technical Center Review

Pioneer Technical Center opened in 2002 for students in 9th through 12th grades. The main focus of the educational scheme is learned trades like business technology and construction. The company is very happy that the school opened in the area and is providing students with a unique education that will help them succeed in their future career options. The student body is diverse with 76% Hispanic, 16% White, 5% African American, 1% Asian, 1% Filipino, and 1% Pacific Islander.

Along with core subjects, Pioneer Technical Center offers a wide array of field trips, community involvement, and a variety of sports. Vocational programs are very important at the school to ensure that students are prepared for life upon graduation whether to attend college or to join the workforce. The vocational programs offered include art & design, building trades, and criminal justice. Parents like all the great opportunities the school offers. Students are excited with the sports and enjoy the field trips. Many students are very pleased with the vocational programs, stating it is providing them with the tools they need for their careers when they graduate.

Parents and students alike only had positive comments regarding the school and teachers. The majority of students expressed they really love the teachers and that they are very helpful and attentive. Students also expressed that without attending this school they do not believe they would be headed to college after graduation. Teachers are very dedicated to their success and treat them with respect, which helps each student want to succeed.

The Academic Performance Index showed a decline of 18 points from the previous year to a score of 483. The statewide goal is 800. Several parents were very disappointed this score and have talked with administration to see what can be done to increase the score.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.

The percentage of students passing the exams was below the state averages across the board. Once again, parents are not happy with the results and are working with teachers to learn how to help their children do better.

The California High School Exit Exam tests 10th graders mastering skills in English language arts and mathematics. In English, 50% of students passed the exam with the state average at 83% and in math 44% passed with the state at 84%. This was a huge concern for the majority of parents.

With the comments from parents and students, the school is doing a good job preparing students for their future; however, the test scores show a very different path. It would be in your best interest to tour the school and talk with administration regarding the exam scores before enrolling your child.
