Para Los Ninos Charter School Review

Para Los Ninos Charter School opened in 2002 for families in the area with students in Kindergarten through 5th grades with an option over traditional school settings. The school provides education to students as well as childcare. The focus is on a rigorous academic program emphasizing discipline.

Along with core subjects, the school offers activities for the entire family. These include after school programs, workforce services and youth development. While both parents and students appreciate this, the students would like to see more activities where they can enjoy various clubs such as yearbook and sports like baseball.

The opinion of parents is overall pretty good with most happy the school is providing a quality education. The major complaints from parents are the disorganization seen with after school programs. The school can also be disorganized at times with staff not reporting to parents as often as they would like. Students expressed they like the school but as mentioned above they would like to see more than just after school programs.

The Academic Performance Index increased by 36 points from the previous year to a score of 773. The statewide goal is 800. Parents are pleased with the increase but would like to see an even higher score closer to the statewide goal.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.

The percentage of students passing the exams was both above and below the state averages with the Math exams being where the students excelled most. Parents were very pleased to see their children excelling in math but would like to see more focus on English.

The school is providing a safe and nurturing learning environment, however, to ensure the environment is one in which your child will excel, you should talk with other parents that have students enrolled before making your final decision.
