Palisades Charter High School Review

Palisades Charter High School opened in 1993 to serve families with students in 9th through 12th grades with an option over traditional school settings. The school prepares students for college as well as to join the workforce with individualized instruction as well as a rigorous curriculum and thematic focus.

Along with core subjects, the school offers a nice sports program and a variety of other extracurricular activities. The sports available include basketball, soccer, and softball, and baseball, cheer/drill team, cross country, football, golf lacrosse, swim/dive, surfing, tennis, track and field, volleyball, water polo and wresting. Other activities include anime, baking, chess, equestrian, film, robotics, poetry club and many more. Students and parents love that the school offers such a variety of programs unlike other charter schools they have visited.

The opinion of the school is very mixed with most parents proud of the achievements of their children with some that worry about the math classes and teachers. Other parents love their focus on college and the activities that other schools just do not offer. The students like their school and being able to participate in activities. Most students expressed they feel safe at school and the teachers are very respectful.

The Academic Performance Index increased by 19 points from the previous year to a score of 847. The statewide goal is 800. Parents are pleased with the increase and are happy that their children are doing better than the goal.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.

The percentage of students passing the exams was high and low scores as compared to the state averages. Parents were not very concerned with the low averages as the majority of students are learning and enjoy attending school.

The California High School Exit Exam tests 10th graders mastering skills in English language arts and mathematics. Students at Palisades Charter High School did very well with the exit exam with 94% passing the English exam with the state average at 83% and 93% in math with the state at 84%. Parents and teachers alike were very proud of these percentages.

Overall, the school is providing students with an exceptional education with activities that some schools only dream about. It would be in your best interest to take a tour and meet the teachers to ensure the school is one that will meet the needs of your family.
